Color-Changing Cold Brew Will Be the Next Big Beverage Trend
Sip the rainbow!
This week, Starbucks announced their latest Insta-worthy drink: a color-changing cold brew.
Starting on Tuesday, the international coffee giant will offer a “Butterfly Pea Lemonade Cold Brew.” This ombre tea-lemonade-coffee is presented with three distinct layers of bright purple, pale yellow, and rich coffee-colored cold brew.
It’s basically a java-infused twist on an Arnold Palmer.
The beverage breakdown: According to Starbucks’ press release, the drink’s color-changing properties come from butterfly tea powder. When the popular Southeast Asian ingredient mixes with the citrus in the lemonade layer, it changes colors from its natural blue hue to a vibrant shade of violet.
And as you swirl the drink with your straw, the layers mix together to create a captivating fusion of colors.

We’ve seen this magical, jewel-toned metamorphosis in noodles before, but it’s new to coffee. No doubt it’ll be a big trend soon.
The downside: this ’grammable sipper will only be available in select markets throughout Asia. For now (here’s looking at you, Starbucks US).
