Drink Up: The Frenzy Over Cheese Tea
The first beverage trend of 2018 will have you saying “cheese.”
Who doesn’t love cheese? Creamy, glorious dairy makes most foods taste way better—think burgers, pasta, sandwiches, and more. But what about cheese on your next cup o’ tea?
The bizarre-sounding beverage combo that’s blowing up across Asia is finally available Stateside—and it’s already causing quite a stir on social media.
So what exactly is cheese tea? Jenny Zheng, founder of LA-based Little Fluffy Head Cafe, a boba shop specializing in high-quality cheese tea drinks, helps us break it down for you:
“It’s a surprisingly delicious mix of cheese and tea, which includes a layer of decadent, creamy cheese foam paired on top of freshly-brewed sweet tea, served hot or cold,” Zheng shares.
This unlikely mashup does include actual cheese, but it’s far from the melty mozz or zippy parmesan you may be thinking of. The dairy-topped drink features fluffy froth made from cream cheese and condensed milk—and can be adjusted for sweet and salty palates.
The foam flavor profile resembles that of cheesecake, and adds creaminess and contrast to a variety of teas including matcha, jasmine, and oolong.
The cheese tea craze originated overseas, and if its popularity in Asia is any indication (people have waited on lines upwards of 5 hours to get their cheese tea on!), it will be everywhere in the US before we know it.
Try the trendy tea for yourself (and with less of a wait) at Little Fluffy Head Cafe (Los Angeles); Honey & Butter Macarons (Irvine, CA); TeaArias (Huntington Beach, CA); and Happy Lemon (locations in Boston, New York, and San Francisco) — and don’t forget to selfie your cheesy tea foam ’stache.
Cheese is everything, and we’re all for enjoying it in new ways.
