Guac You Like A Hurricane

Guac You Like A Hurricane

Salsa is so last season. This winter, guacamole is earning its well-deserved place in the sun. Eateries throughout the United States are elevating the art of mashed avocado and creating something far more decadent than your usual guac. From cured meats to mushrooms, a wide variety of enticing flavors are being fused into the avo dip, and we aren’t mad about it.

On November 14th, better known to avocado enthusiasts as National Spicy Guacamole Day, we’re celebrating the most creative guacamole riffs from across the country. Honor the mighty avocado today by dipping your chip into one of these twelve gorgeous guacs:

Crispy Chorizo Guac

Guac Tacos and Tequila, New York City

The perfect marriage of salty, creamy, and spicy, Guac Tacos and Tequila’s crispy chorizo guacamole is a carnivore’s dream. Combining chorizo with a traditional cilantro-and-lime-infused guacamole, this decadent dish is an out-of-this-world eating experience.

Smoked Trout Guacamole

El Vez, Philadelphia, PA

Stephen Starr’s Philadelphia hotspot, El Vez, takes traditional Mexican food and turns it into something greater than the sum of its parts. Case in point: the smoked trout guacamole, a specialty guacamole boasting ingredients that seem like they’d fight each other, but actually make for a rich, smoky dip that you’ll be eager to eat time and time again.

Black Truffle Guacamole

Isalita, Ann Arbor, MI

If you’re feeling fancy, head over to Isalita in Ann Arbor for their black truffle guacamole. The earthy taste of black truffles complements the avocado’s mild flavor without overpowering it, creating a smooth and savory dip that’s as at home on a tortilla chip as it is on a salad.

Grasshoper Guacamole

Dos Caminos, New York City

If you want a little crunch to offset the creaminess of your guacamole, head down to Dos Caminos in Manhattan. This Tex-Mex chain is putting power protein into their guacamole recipe in the form of grasshoppers. While crunching into a bug may seem less-than-appetizing to some, this recipe is popular enough to have its own hashtag on Instagram.

Lolita Cocina, Boston, MA

Bacon makes everything better, guacamole included. At Lolita Cocina in Boston, you can satisfy your savory tooth by ordering the crispy, salty, fatty bacon guacamole. Tomorrow’s a better day to start a diet, anyway.

Pumpkin Seed Guacamole

Jack Allen’s Kitchen, Austin, TX

Even if grasshopper guac isn’t up your alley, you can still enjoy some satisfying crunch in your guacamole. At Jack Allen’s Kitchen in Austin, pumpkin seeds steal the show, balancing out the guac’s creaminess, keeping this version creamy and vegan-friendly in one fell swoop.

Mint Guacamole

A.G. Kitchen, New York City

Pomegranate Guacamole

Toca Madera, West Hollywood, CA

Your favorite dip just got a whole lot sweeter. West Hollywood eatery Toca Madera tops their guacamole with pomegranate seeds, providing crunch, a hint of sweetness, and a complex mix of flavors you just can’t miss.

Lobster Guacamole

Paddlefish, Lake Buena Vista, FL

It’s no wonder Disney is billed as the happiest place on earth: just look at their food. At Paddlefish in Downtown Disney, you can make your guacamole order even more indulgent by adding luscious lobster to it. Even Scrooge McDuck would be impressed.

Mango Guacamole

Lorena’s Cantina, Manchester, NH

Add some tropical flavor to your favorite avocado-based dip at Lorena’s Cantina in Manchester, NH. This Mexican eatery adds diced mango to their famous guacamole, lending the recipe some sweetness without interfering with the creamy texture that makes it so satisfying.

Sweet Pea Guacamole

Matador Room, Miami Beach, FL

From the much-maligned pea guacamole recipe in the New York Times was born some hope. Case in point: the sweet pea guacamole at Matador Room in Miami Beach. Served with warm crunchy tortillas, this tasty take on tradition is sure to change the hearts of those pea guacamole skeptics.
